Grandmaster Zhang Yuanming’s Suspended Golden Elixir · Flying-White Ancient Bronze-Script “Dao” · Qi-Field Contemplation
Calligraphy by Grandmaster Zhang Yuanming
Spirit Journey Transforms into the Cosmos; Contemplation Returns to the One Self.
I. One Character, One Dao · Ancient Script and the Journey of Life
“Dao” is one of the most significant spiritual characters in Eastern root civilization. In early forms of Chinese writing, the structure of Dao was closely associated with graphic elements suggesting the “head,” “movement,” and “walking.” Its early meanings of road, direction, and passage gradually developed into a profound symbol of cosmic order, the source of life, and spiritual practice.
Within Zhang Yuanming’s Primordial-Spirit Calligraphy, Dao is therefore more than a written character. It becomes a trace of life in motion: Humanity journeys within the Dao; the Dao becomes luminous within the heart. The brush follows Qi, and spirit arises from the heart.
II. The Suspended Golden Elixir · Emptiness Within the Circle
圓外是宇宙,圓內亦是宇宙;
The most powerful visual center of this work is the great circular movement within the character Dao. It is not a mechanically perfect geometric circle, but a “living circle” born through pressure and release, turning, acceleration, deceleration, density, and emptiness.
Within Zhang Yuanming’s artistic concept of the “Suspended Golden Elixir,” this circle may be contemplated as an elixir suspended in the void: its circumference gathers Qi while its center preserves emptiness. Ink gives visible form; white space opens toward the formless. Presence and absence generate one another.
Beyond the circle is the cosmos; within the circle is also the cosmos.
Ink reveals its form; emptiness nourishes its spirit.
III. Flying-White Divine Light · The Ink Breaks, Yet Qi Continues
筆斷,炁未斷;
墨盡,神未盡;
Along the lower arc and turning points of the circle, striking “flying-white” textures emerge. In calligraphic terms, these textures arise from the interaction of brush fibers, ink, speed, pressure, and paper. Within Zhang Yuanming’s Primordial-Spirit Calligraphy, they are further contemplated symbolically as “Flying-White Divine Light.”
Black ink embodies presence; flying white opens emptiness. The visible ink may appear interrupted, yet the movement of the composition continues.
The brushstroke breaks, yet Qi continues.
The ink ends, yet spirit remains.
Where ink disappears, spiritual resonance arises.
IV. The Point Within the Circle · Celestial-Eye Inner Vision
At the center of the Golden-Elixir circle, a horizontal point of ink floats within an expansive field of white. Formally, it belongs to the structure of the character; contemplatively, it may also symbolize the “Eye of the Primordial Spirit.”
The outer circle evokes the cosmos; the inner point evokes concentrated light. The gaze moves from outward observation toward inward illumination—an artistic transformation expressed as Celestial-Eye Inner Vision.
One point contains myriad forms; one inner eye illuminates the void.
V. Four Principal Contemplative Practices · From Calligraphy to Life
Breath-Listening Contemplation
Celestial-Eye Inner Vision
Inner Contemplative Transformation
Primordial-Spirit Resonance
Zhang Yuanming’s Primordial-Spirit Calligraphy extends beyond simply “looking at characters.” It proposes four principal contemplative terms through which calligraphy becomes an inward practice:
Breath-Listening Contemplation — entering stillness through natural breathing and perceiving the rhythm of opening and closing.
Celestial-Eye Inner Vision — returning from external brushwork toward inner awareness.
Inner Contemplative Transformation — transforming perception into awareness of one’s own life.
Primordial-Spirit Resonance — allowing form, Qi, spirit, and resonance to awaken a deeper contemplative response.
VI. One Character, One Universe · Contemplation as Practice
以飛白神光顯韻;
Thus, Zhang Yuanming’s Dao unfolds through three interconnected dimensions:
Ancient script establishes the image;
the Suspended Golden Elixir gathers spirit;
Flying-White Divine Light reveals resonance.
It then opens toward contemplative practice:
Breath-Listening Contemplation enters stillness;
Celestial-Eye Inner Vision returns inward;
Inner Contemplative Transformation transforms awareness;
Primordial-Spirit Resonance opens spiritual communion.
One character—Dao—thus becomes a spiritual image that can be viewed, read, and inwardly contemplated.
Inscription on Dao · Qi-Field Contemplation
One stroke opens Heaven and Earth; one circle suspends the Golden Elixir.
Moving ink gives rise to myriad forms; flying white reveals divine light.
Listening to breath returns one to stillness; the Celestial Eye illuminates the heart.
Spirit Journey Transforms into the Cosmos; Contemplation Returns to the One Self.
